Are you an Eagan resident and wondering what community groups there are to join? Recently retired and wondering where to volunteer? Have you always wanted to put a question to someone at City Hall? Are you looking for advice on your resume? Do you want a chance to be remembered decades from now? Do you enjoy free music, free food, free games and balloons tied into various shapes? Or perhaps you just want the kids to see up close what police dogs, fire trucks, and snow plows are like?
Those are some of the many reasons to attend Showcase Eagan, Thursday night, June 4, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Eagan Civic Arena, 3870 Pilot Knob Road. Schedule of Events.
All City departments and some 40 non-profit groups, civic organizations and churches have display booths at the free event including the Eagan Athletic Association, Scouting programs, Senior offerings, Lions, Rotary, recycling programs and more.
A major highlight of this year’s Showcase is the chance for residents to contribute an item they would like considered for inclusion in an official time capsule Eagan will create to celebrate its 150th birthday next year.
“Perhaps people have a photo of their neighborhood or what life is like in Eagan in 2009; maybe it’s their favorite song or movie, what book they are reading or the cost of grocery items today,” said Eagan History Historical Society Chair Ted Wachter. “It’s a chance at immortality really. We want a memento of what is important to you and what the people of Eagan will find interesting 150 years from now.”
Eagan’s Human Resources Director will offer seminars on setting yourself apart in job interviews and provide “quick glance” reactions to your résumé. Parents can have teen drivers experience the so-called “fatal vision” goggles that simulate what it is like to try to pass a sobriety test if a driver is drunk. The Fire Department will demonstrate fire safety techniques from its new safety trailer. There’s K-9 Police Dog demonstrations. Eagan Television will be taping residents reading promo messages and station ID’s and showing how anyone can produce community programming for E-TV. Residents can also enjoy the Eagan Men’s Chorus and Women of Note as they offer musical selections.
Showcase Eagan is a biennial event last held in 2007 when nearly 1,400 people attended. This year’s theme is “Discover the Value” in these resource constrained times. One of the fun displays is a comparison between the salary and statistics of Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez and the stats on what you get for your money from the City of Eagan.
“It’s not just the value of city services,” says Eagan City Administrator Tom Hedges, “but it is also the value of community one discovers in Eagan. Last time people told me that they had no idea there were so many interesting community groups to learn about.” A guidebook will be handed out with contact information on all the community groups and it includes a $1 off coupon for some summer activities in the city. The indoor event will be held rain or shine in the Civic Arena. For the latest information on the Showcase Eagan program, check the City Web site at www.cityofeagan.com/showcase .
