Eagan has about 200 natural lakes and wetlands an acre or more in area, and almost all are part of a stormwater drainage system with over 1,200 natural and constructed waterbodies. Lakes and wetlands are ecological systems affected especially by phosphorus in stormwater. When algae and macrophytes that thrive on phosphorus decay, dissolved oxygen can drop to stressful levels for sensitive fish and other aquatic animals. Impaired water quality diminishes recreational opportunities and aesthetic enjoyment and negatively affects property values.
