Eagan Police Introduce Program for Medication Disposal

In collaboration with the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, the Eagan Police Department has implemented an unused prescription drug drop-off program.   A secure box, located in the Eagan Police Department lobby, now allows citizens to anonymously dispose of waste pharmaceuticals and other unused medications free of charge.

Traditionally unused medications within households have been disposed of by flushing them into sewer systems, causing pollution in wastewater and adverse effects to the environment.  To address these concerns, the Eagan Police Department partnered with Dakota County, who already established a program to facilitate the collection and proper disposal of unused, unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals. Initially implemented at three locations across the County in 2012, the program collected over 1,200 pounds in the first three months of the program.   

Accepted substances include over the counter and prescription pills, liquids along with gelatins and creams. Any of these types of items should be packaged in their original container with any personal information removed from or “blacked-out” on the container. All of the substances collected will be disposed of at a licensed incinerator within the State of Minnesota. 

Those utilizing this program can dispose of their unwanted substances Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.  Citizens should not place needles/sharp instruments, loose powders, aerosols, devices containing mercury, items contaminated with body fluids, or any other products containing bio-hazardous/radioactive waste into the drop box.
